2016 Dirk Hartog – 400th Anniversary of Landing 1oz Silver Proof Coin
Commemorate one of the earliest recorded European landfalls on Australian soil with the 2016 Dirk Hartog – Australia Landing 1oz Silver Proof Coin, issued by The Perth Mint. This release marks the 400th anniversary of Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog’s landing at Shark Bay, Western Australia, in 1616.
Struck from 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver, the coin’s reverse features a stylised representation of Hartog’s ship, the Eendracht, anchored off the rugged coastline, along with a depiction of the famous inscribed pewter plate he left behind. The design is inscribed with “DIRK HARTOG 1616 – 2016”.
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. Each coin is issued as Australian legal tender and housed in an official presentation case, accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity and themed shipper. The release was strictly limited to a mintage of 5,000 coins.
