Sell an Inherited Coin Collection

Inherited coins or banknotes and unsure where to start? You do not need to identify or value every item before contacting us. Send photographs of the collection and your location, and we can assess whether it is suitable for direct purchase or auction.

Sydney-based, welcoming enquiries from across Australia.

A mixed coin collection laid out on a table: carded pre-decimal coins in album pages, mint sets, an Australia Three-Six Pence album and boxed wedge-tailed eagle coins

You do not need to sort everything first

Collections often arrive in albums, tins, envelopes and presentation boxes, with a mixture of coins and banknotes accumulated over many years. Start with photographs showing what you have. You do not need a complete inventory or a value for every item.

  • Keep albums, labels, certificates and purchase records together.
  • Leave coins in their existing holders and packaging.
  • If there is a large amount, begin with overview photographs and a few representative close-ups.

What might be in your collection?

A collection can contain both valuable and common material. Its age or size alone does not establish its value; the individual items, condition and collector demand matter.

  • Australian pre-decimal coins and banknotes
  • Sovereigns, half sovereigns and other gold coins
  • Royal Australian Mint, Perth Mint and other mint-issued products
  • Graded coins and specialist collections
  • Ancient coins and collectible world coins
  • Mixed albums, boxed sets and accumulated holdings

Ordinary decimal change, common circulated pennies and halfpennies, and modern overseas travel change are generally outside our buying focus. Key dates, scarce varieties and other collectible material may be exceptions. If these items form part of a wider inherited collection, show us the collection as a whole.

Direct sale or auction

Sell directly to Ensleigh Coins

If the collection is suitable, we can make an offer to purchase. You can consider the offer before deciding whether to proceed. Inspection, handover and electronic payment arrangements are agreed with you.

Explore auction through Copeland Roberts

For suitable collections or individual pieces, auction provides another selling option. We can discuss the proposed approach, estimates, applicable fees and timing before you decide.

Neither method always produces a higher return. The right choice depends on the material, your timing and your preferences.

How to get started

  1. Send photographs

Show us the collection, include a few clear close-ups and tell us where you are located.

  2. Receive an initial assessment

We review the information and advise whether the material appears suitable for purchase or auction. We may ask for further photographs or an inspection.

  3. Agree the next step

If you decide to proceed, we agree the selling method and arrangements for inspection and handover.

We respond to enquiries within 48 hours.

Our free initial assessment is to establish suitability for purchase or auction. It is not a formal probate or insurance valuation.

Photographing an inherited collection

You do not need to photograph every coin individually to make the first enquiry. We can ask for closer views where needed.

  • Take overview photographs of albums, boxes and groups of items.
  • Photograph both sides of a few representative coins and any pieces you would particularly like assessed.
  • Include visible dates, labels and grading-holder details.
  • Photograph banknotes without removing them from protective sleeves.
  • Include certificates or purchase records if available.
  • Tell us roughly how much material there is and your location.

Please do not clean or polish coins, or remove them from sealed grading holders. Keep original packaging and paperwork with the collection.

Questions

Do I need to know what the collection is worth?

No. Overview photographs and a few details are enough to start the discussion.

Can you consider the whole collection?

Yes. We can review the collection as a whole and explain which material is suitable for purchase or auction.

Can I keep some items and sell the rest?

Yes. Let us know which items you would like to keep, and we will exclude them from any proposed sale.

Can you visit to inspect the collection?

We consider visits after reviewing your photographs, depending on the collection and its location. Appointments and travel are by arrangement.

You do not need all the answers before getting in touch. Show us the collection and tell us where you are located.
